 The Truth About A Nomad

Nomad:  Someone who does not lead a settled life but moves from place to place, usually seeking pasture for herds of grazing animals.

So you want to know the secrets of a nomad? What makes him tick. First of all, wanderers are born and not created. You must have no attachments to possessions or people to be a true wanderer.

When I decide to leave, what I cannot sell, I just give away to anyone nearby. No object is sacred. Everything must go. Something within me tells me that it is time to depart, regardless of all obstacles.

Very often, I am amused at the crowds pouring into K-Mart Stores, endlessly purchasing everything in sight. Do they really need all these items? Do they bring sublime happiness?

A real wanderer can say goodbye to the many friends of the moment, and not shed a tear, nor have a care for anything in the world. This applies to family members as well as acquaintances. The traveller waves goodbye with a large grin on his face. On to the next paradise, are the thought's uppermost in his or her mind. One hour later, the nomad is concentrating on the next immediate destination, all memories of people and places left behind, long since vaporized from his mind.

Nomads must march ever onwards. Nothing is too hard or too difficult to achieve. There is no such word as 'can't' to stumble over, to act as an obstacle. The crushing and tremendous willpower is working overtime. He must reach the next town or country at all costs!

Negative thoughts never enter the mind. Being positive is the only sound ringing in the ears. He constantly reminds himself that nirvana is just around the corner!

Of course, in reality, I know that nirvana is within yourself. Nevertheless, I must wing my way, never looking back. Only forwards!

Every time I have moved to another place I say to myself, "I will stop here."
How many times have I said this ? Far too numerous even to attempt to remember!

Once I get the urge, which can be fired by reading a novel or just a thought, it is inevitable, just like the setting sun. I must move on.

Sometimes, when thinking back, I think of past friends or places, but always manage to convince myself that over the next hill is a much better place.

True nomads find it very easy to exist and survive, and always have a new circle of friends, all eager to share his experiences of the past and listen to his tales of adventure.

Many declare, "I will follow in your footsteps," but very few do so, because they think of their possessions and friends. This holds them back, and they find that they cannot get away, and are trapped in their own little world which, after all, is what they really want. The nomad's tales fire their imagination only briefly.

Wanderers are never lonely. The next person they meet and talk to in a new town is their immediate friend. Nomads simply do not understand people who are lonely. Simply leave the house and talk to anyone you see. Immediately, you are lonely no more!

You ask, "What will I do if I settle down?"

The answer is the same as I do nowadays.

The computer has been my biggest friend for the last few years, since I communicate with complete strangers all over the world, and in many lands. As a youngster, I always had penfriends, mainly girls, in a great number of countries. Receiving letters with foreign stamps always thrilled and excited me, and my mind conjured up the delights of the recipient's homeland.

Normally, whilst I am settled, I carry out voluntary work, which keeps me busy. At present, I teach computers to the Over 50s. Also, I find that I must walk every day to see new people and places.

Since my divorce, I have belonged to a Dating Club and meet, correspond and go out with many fine ladies from Argentina, Sweden, America, England, New Zealand and Australia.

I am quite happy with the civilized world in its current state, and do not despair or worry about problems that may never occur. The world, in itself, has a way of solving all life's situations, I feel.

This story could go on forever, but I will not let it for, put simply, in order to understand a nomad, you simply have to be a nomad!
