Cormorant Bay
The decision to build a catchment area to provide storage of water for the new Wivenhoe Dam changed the whole area beyond recognition. Where there had once been rolling farmland, there is now a vast man-made lake that ensures a water supply for the nearby city of Brisbane. Brisbane can't be seen from this part of the lake as it is hidden behind the mountain range seen in this and other pictures. The Wivenhoe project also generates electricity, which will permit further development of south-east Queensland. One change which was quickly approved of by the local inhabitants was a road across the wall of the dam which, it was immediately agreed, was a huge improvement upon the previous narrow and winding road which serviced the area. We could suddenly get there much quicker. And that is a plus-factor any day of the week. Another change, which was largely not anticipated, was an abrupt change in the climate of the area. The previously arid region suddenly became very humid, and violently destructive thunderstorms are, naturally, attracted by the large body of water. It's as though we've all miraculously been relocated against our better judgment. Still, I suppose, it's given us something fresh to grumble about. It makes a change from taxes. Yet another change is the creation of the extensive Cormorant Bay Picnic Area which abuts the lake, and provides a scenic meeting place for local people and tourists alike. All photographs in this series were taken during a leisurely afternoon stroll in this picnic area. A stroll in which conversation naturally reflected the casual meandering of our feet. Come and share our thoughts with us as we wander . . . - Warren Roff-Marsh
