A Gentle Man

To hold a door or someone's chair,
To bow or tip his hat,
For a gentleman, politeness shows,
No matter where he's at.

But is a man less of a man
When a door or chair's forgot.
Should a lady act insulted
And put him on the spot?

The days of proper etiquette
Seem buried in the past.
Perhaps brought on by women's lib,
Has equality come at last?

What was once taken for granted
Now comes as a pleasant surprise.
And some are even insulted
Whenever a gentleman tries.

But as for me, personally,
I'll follow my own plan.
If a gentleman isn't available
I'll settle for a gentle man.
