Leaving

Slowly, she opens her eyes
     from her night of dreams.
There, beside her, just a pillow and an envelope,
like a headstone on a grave.
Fear slowly overcomes her,
and a tear slowly rolls down her cheek.
Trembling fingers tear open the envelope
with her name to reveal her fate.

I cannot love you anymore!
     is all that is written.

She wants to beat him with clenched fists
and scream out her pain to him.
Tears begin to fall and, as she sobs,
she just wants to be with him.
She longs to wrap her arms around him
     and beg him to stay.
She looks down at the empty pillow,
     it shares her loneliness.
She lays down her head gently
     on the pillow and cries.
He has gone, never to return,
never to rest his head next to her again.
